The generation of the Mabul committed murder, idolatry and immorality. Yet Chazal say their fate was sealed only because of chamas, a kind of theft. Why was that the final straw? And why did no one do teshuvah, even as the water rose to their knees, their chests and their noses?
In this Parshas Noach shiur, R’ Yehoshua Zitron shows that the deadliest sin isn’t the worst act. It’s being convinced you’ve done nothing wrong.
In this shiur:
🔹 Chamas, the hidden code of the Teivah. The Zohar and the Meged Yosef teach that the serpent was originally just the letter ches, and Adam added a nun and a shin to make it nachash. The accusing angel was originally samech-mem, and the aleph-lamed made it Sama’el. The dimensions of the ark were 300 (shin), 50 (nun), 30 (lamed), and a roof of 1 amah (aleph). Noach drew out the letters of holiness, and what remains is ches-mem-samech: CHAMAS.
🔹 Three kinds of thief. A gazlan robs by force, and a ganav steals secretly. A chamsan forces you to sell and pays you. Why do Chazal call the chamsan the worst? Because he says, “I paid. It’s just business.” The shiur also covers the mafia mindset, Al Capone, and Sodom, where cruelty was the law.
🔹 Why the wicked don’t repent even at the gates of Gehinnom (Eruvin 19a). The shiur looks at why Hashem Himself calls the Satan “bad” (Kiddushin 30b), and why the Satan looks like both an idol worshipper and a talmid chacham (Chulin 91a). The answer: he paints sins as mitzvos.
🔹 Why the yetzer hara will be slaughtered (Sukkah 52a). The Baal Shem Tov reads it through Shabbos 75a: the yetzer hara is guilty of “dyeing,” coloring the aveirah to look like a mitzvah, before he takes the soul.
🔹 Rebbe Aharon of Karlin and the almanah. How to recognize when a “noble” thought is really the yetzer hara.
🔹 Pride is the root (Sanhedrin 108a). Abundance made the Dor HaMabul arrogant: “What do we need Him for? We have our own rivers!” Rabbi Yosi teaches that the eye resembles water, and so they were punished with water.
🔹 A true story of a family feud. A son’s release from a brutal foreign prison came only when his father humbled himself and asked for forgiveness.
🔹 Chamas vs. chesed, pride vs. humility. Pride says “it’s mine.” Humility says “it’s His.” Wherever you find Hashem’s greatness, you find His humility (Megillah 31a).
🔹 “Hashem is your shadow.” The Baal Shem Tov and the Chasam Sofer explain that had they shown compassion to each other, Hashem would have shown compassion to them. Also covered: Olam chesed yibaneh, Rav Tanchuma and the drought, and Rabbi Yishmael’s tears engraved on the Kisei HaKavod (Tiferes Shlomo).
🔹 Why the heart is on the left (the Lubavitcher Rebbe), the order of the Mi Sheberach, “Im kesef talveh” (Chasam Sofer), the honored ones of Yerushalayim, and why we still wait until the 7th of Cheshvan to ask for rain.
🔹 Chesed in the Teivah. Shem ben Noach tells Avraham they were saved in the merit of tzedakah to the animals, a year with no sleep. The shiur asks why only eight people were in the ark, and covers Reb Elazar Tzaddok Turchin’s erev Yom Kippur chesed and Binyamin HaTzaddik’s 22 extra years (Bava Basra 11a).
🔹 Noach’s flaw and Moshe’s tikkun (R’ Pinchas Friedman). The decree was issued against Noach too (Sanhedrin 108a). His humility kept him from rebuking and praying for his generation. The Divrei Yisrael of Modzitz explains נח becoming חן, the bent nun turning into the straight nun. The Arizal teaches that Noach was reincarnated as Moshe, and מחני is an anagram of מי נח. “Ki tov hu” equals 17, the generations from Noach to Moshe. Moshe was saved in a teivah, Basya named him “from the water,” and the Dor HaMabul was rectified in Mitzrayim.
🔹 Holy pride. “His heart was uplifted in the ways of Hashem.” Humility for yourself, pride for kedushah.
The takeaway: The Satan’s greatest trick is convincing us that we don’t need to change, in our marriages, our parenting, our business, and our relationship with Hashem.
