Chovos Halvavos explains another reason why most people are blind to Hashem's kindness: we've been receiving His gifts for so long that we've stopped recognizing them as gifts. Breathing, eating, sleeping, and countless other benefits have accompanied us since infancy, and we take them for granted as though they're simply part of who we are.
Rabbeinu Bachya illustrates this with a fascinating mashal of an abandoned infant and a starving prisoner. Both are rescued and cared for, but the one who receives far greater kindness may actually feel less gratitude. Why? Because the greatest obstacle to appreciating Hashem's gifts may be how accustomed we've become to receiving them.
